Transitioning From Soon to be EOL Micron 5300 SATA SSDs to the 5400 Series

Micron recently announced that the 5300 SATA SSD is going EOL (End of Life) soon. First launched in 2019, Micron's 10th generation data center SATA SSD has been on the market for 3 years and it is now time to begin the EOL process. This drive is being replaced by the Micron 5400 SATA SSD, an advanced SATA SSD that is also the world's first with 176-layer NAND.

Key EOL Dates

Here are some dates to keep in mind as you place your final orders for the 5300 series:

• 6 Month LTB (Last Time Buy) Period - all orders must be received by January 31, 2023
• 6 Month LTS (Last Time Ship) Period - all previously received orders will be continuing to ship between February 1, 2023 and July 31, 2023

Q&A with our FAE, Keith Peterson

Our specialized Micron FAE, Keith Peterson, answers a few of the most asked questions regarding the transition process from the 5300 to the 5400.

Q: What is new in the Micron 5400 SSD compared to the Micron 5300 SSD?

A: Very little, and that's a good thing! The Micron 5400 leverages the same proven architecture and firmware stack as the Micron 5300. The major change was to refresh the product onto the latest 176-layer replacement gate (RG) NAND. As the 11th generation data center SATA SSD from Micron, customers that have previously qualified the Micron 5300 can expect fast and easy qualifications due to the architectural commonality between the two drives.

Q: Does the Micron 5400 support SED, FIPS, and TAA compliance?

A: The Micron 5400 supports SED configurations with both TCG Opal 2.0 and TCG Enterprise options. TAA compliance is also supported, although TAA-specific MPNs are no longer needed. FIPS is not supported nor planned on the Micron 5400 due to limited FIPS demand on the SATA interface. For FIPS drive support, this feature is typically requested on NVMe SSDs and is available on the Micron 7450 SSD.
