The Micron 6500 ION is heading toward EOL, and it's time to look at what's next.
The answer depends on where you are in your product life cycle.
- If you need to act now, the Micron 6550 ION is available today, a PCIe Gen5 upgrade that doubles available capacity over the 6500 ION.
- If your workload requirements are 122TB capacity or higher, the Micron 6600 ION is on the horizon.
This guide covers both paths: what each drive offers, how the specs stack up, and how to find your part number replacement, so you can make the right call for your infrastructure.
Key EOL Dates
Micron has issued a Product Discontinuance Notification (PDN) for the Micron 6500 ION NVMe SSD. The key dates customers need to plan around are:
- Last Order Date: August 25th, 2026
- Last Ship Date: February 25th, 2027
Orders placed after the Last Order Date will not be accepted. Customers who have not yet secured inventory or begun their transition should act promptly. Once the Last Ship Date passes, the 6500 ION will no longer be available through any channel.

Compatibility Notes
6500 ION to 6550 ION:
- U.3 to U.2: The 6500 ION uses the U.3 (SFF-8639) connector; the 6550 ION uses U.2 (SFF-8639). These share the same physical connector and are slot-compatible. No hardware modification is required.
- PCIe Gen5 backward compatibility: The 6550 ION is fully backward compatible with PCIe Gen4 platforms. In a Gen4 server, the drive will operate at Gen4 speeds. A Gen5-capable host platform is required to realize the full performance improvement.
- E1.L form factor: Transitions to the 6550 ION E1.L as a like-for-like replacement. Note that E1.L ends with the 6550 ION.
- E3.S form factor (new on 6550): The 6550 ION introduces E3.S-1T, which wasn’t available on the 6500 ION. This is an optional upgrade path for customers seeking higher density.
6500 ION to 6600 ION:
The 6600 ION is available in U.2 (15mm) and E3.S-1T (7.5mm) form factors. Customers on E1.L with the 6500 ION should note that the 6600 ION doesn’t currently offer an E1.L option; A form factor change would be required.
- PCIe Gen5: Like the 6550 ION, the 6600 ION runs on PCIe Gen5 and is backward compatible with Gen4 platforms at Gen4 speeds.
- QLC vs. TLC: The 6600 ION uses QLC NAND rather than the TLC NAND found in both the 6500 and 6550 ION. For write-intensive workloads, customers should review endurance ratings carefully.
- Availability: The 6600 ION is not yet broadly available through distribution. Contact Edge to discuss timelines.

What About the Micron 6600 ION?
If you’re looking for the highest capacity drive available, this is it. The Micron 6600 ION is a PCIe Gen5 enterprise NVMe SSD with capacities up to 122TB (E3.S) and 245TB (E3.L).
The 6600 ION is currently sampling and is not yet broadly available through distribution channels. Customers who need to transition now should plan around the 6550 ION.
A few points worth keeping in mind:
- The 6600 ION’s 122TB+ capacity is most compelling for hyperscale and extreme-density deployments. For the majority of enterprise customers, the 6550 ION is the practical and better-performing fit.
- The 6600 ION does not currently offer an E1.L form factor. Customers on E1.L with the 6500 ION will need to change form factors when transitioning to the 6600 ION.

Did You Know? The 6550 ION Also Comes in 61.44TB
The 6550 ION is available in a 61.44TB configuration, doubling per-drive capacity over the 6500 ION with no change in power envelope. In E3.S configuration, 20 drives per 1U server yields approximately 1.2PB per rack unit compared to 24 U.2 drives per 2U for roughly 0.75PB per rack unit. Customers with high-density storage requirements should evaluate whether the 61.44TB SKU reduces server count, rack footprint, and associated licensing costs.
