Digital View in Control

Posted by Justin Giannone on August 4, 2026 at 9:54 AM

This month we did something different with our LCD newsletter: we handed it over. Digital View, the controller-board specialists who have been designing display electronics since 1995, wrote the whole issue. They have been a mainstay of the Edge line card for years, and as their authorized distribution partner we supply their full range of LCD, OLED, and E Ink controller boards.

The Controller Solution Generator, rebuilt

The CSG has been quietly matching controller boards to panels for over 20 years. Digital View has now rebuilt it from the ground up. The new version searches a database of more than 4,000 display panels, and you can start from either direction: type in a panel model number, or upload the panel's spec document and let the tool work from that.

What comes back is more than a board suggestion. The CSG returns the matching controller, the required cables, connection details, and the documentation you need to integrate it. It is just as useful on the maintenance side as in new designs. If you support a long-lifecycle program in medical, industrial, or defense and need to replace an end-of-life panel, the CSG will point you to a working combination fast.

Highlights from SID Display Week 2026

This was Digital View's 27th Display Week, and their read on the Las Vegas show floor is a useful one for anyone building real products. OLED, microLED, and flexible panels drew the crowds, but LCD remains the workhorse of industrial, medical, and commercial applications for the same reasons it always has: maturity, cost-effectiveness, and long-term availability.

On the Digital View stand: the new ALC-7680 8K controller, harsh-environment boards, the ALC-4096-AIH and AI-100 boards for AI processing at the display, and the AI-50 module that adds Ethernet and LLM-based control. Also on show was the new EPL-300 controller driving E Ink's new 75-inch Kaleido color panel, a purpose-built board for the latest generation of large-format, low-power E Ink displays.

Six ways to control the controller

How do you actually talk to a controller board once it is in your product? Using the ALC-4096 as the working example, Digital View walks through six approaches. Expand the ones that match your application:

Local control: on-screen menus

Adjust brightness, contrast, and input selection through on-screen menus using a switch mount or IR remote. No external connections needed. Good for simple installs and bench setups.

DDC/CI: control over the video cable

Adjust brightness, contrast, volume, input source, and power directly through the video cable with no additional wiring. A natural fit for desktop workstations.

RS-232: the full command set

The most comprehensive option: access to all 48 documented functions, including configuration, EDID management, temperature monitoring, and diagnostics. The standard choice for industrial and medical devices.

USB-C serial: the same power, modern port

Modern systems can use the identical RS-232 command set over USB-C, which appears as a virtual serial port. No dedicated serial hardware required.

Ethernet: fleet control with the AI-50

The AI-50 interface extends the RS-232 command set over the network, enabling centralized monitoring and remote management of distributed displays.

Which should you pick?

Different projects have different requirements: DDC/CI for workstations, RS-232 for industrial and medical devices, Ethernet for distributed deployments. The full article includes a reference matrix showing which functions are available over each method.

AI at the edge: the intelligent display

Digital View's newest direction is putting intelligence directly on the display. Their Display Edge initiative is about turning displays into intelligent endpoints that can perceive, interpret, and respond locally and in real time, with no round trip to the cloud. The first hardware, including the ALC-4096-AIH AI board, targets industrial, medical, retail, and public-environment applications where a display that understands its surroundings can do more than show pixels.

How to Choose the Right Industrial LCD Supplier for Long-Term Reliability

Posted by Nicole Liantonio on October 8, 2025 at 3:00 PM

When sourcing an industrial LCD display, choosing the right industrial LCD supplier is just as critical as selecting the right panel.

Industrial environments demand displays that can withstand temperature extremes, vibration, dust, and long lifecycles, but the wrong supplier can lead to mismatched specs, discontinued panels, or costly redesigns.

This guide walks you through the key factors to consider when evaluating industrial LCD suppliers to ensure long-term reliability and performance.

When LCDs Go EOL Mid-Program: How Medical OEMs Avoid Disruption with Edge

Posted by Nicole Liantonio on September 26, 2025 at 11:00 AM

Your device is approaching submission. Validation is lining up. Then an EOL notice lands for the LCD at the heart of your HMI. For medical OEMs, this is more than a sourcing hiccup. It can mean re-validation, documentation churn, supplier audits, production delays, and field-service risk.

The core issue is lifecycle mismatch. Medical devices must be supported for a decade or more. The vast majority of LCDs refresh on much shorter timelines. The answer is not endless alternates. The answer is lifecycle design and proactive monitoring that keeps your program stable from day one.

Navigating COO Requirements: LCD Solutions Not Made in China

Posted by Nicole Liantonio on July 16, 2025 at 10:00 AM

In today's global manufacturing landscape, sourcing LCD Solutions can often feel like navigating a minefield - especially when it comes to meeting strict Country of Origin (COO) requirements.

For many OEMs, contract manufacturers, and purchasing teams, there is growing scrutiny around where LCD modules are made, particularly when customers or regulatory agencies require LCD products that are not of Chinese origin.

Whether it's due to compliance restrictions, tariffs, government contracts, or company policy, many organizations are actively seeking display solutions that are manufactured or assembled outside of China.

But with so many display products being sourced from Chinese factories, how can buyers ensure compliance while still maintaining quality and competitive lead times?
